U.S. ties Honduras 0-0 in U-20 Championship

The U.S. men's Under-20 team has yet to advance to the next round of the CONCACAF U-20 Championships on Sunday as it was held to a 0-0 draw by Honduras.

If they would have won the match, Thomas Rongen's men would have won their group, thus automatically qualifying them for the U-20 World Cup in Egypt later this year.

The match was a somewhat unimpressive one for the U.S. team as it only managed four shots none of which were on target. Billy Schuler was sent off in the 60th minute, which added to the team's frustrations, particularly because the foul was judged by some as being fair.

Schuler came in square on Honduran player Jose Fonseca and took the ball from his feet. Fonseca flew over Schuler and fell to the ground writhing in pain, which was enough for the referee to show Schuler his ticket to an early shower.

Honduras, on the other hand, had a handful of opportunities, highlighted by its four shots on goal and six overall. It also won the battle for corners, as it had three compared to only one for the U.S.

The Catrachos have traditionally been a tough opponent for the U.S., as the Americans have only beaten Honduras once in eight tries in qualifying at the U-20 level.

With four points and the group lead, the U.S. has a favorable outcome in many advancement scenarios, since after two matches, Jamaica has three points, Honduras, two, and El Salvador, one. Yet the draw means that the U.S. will have to wait until it faces El Salvador on Tuesday night to see if it qualifies for the next stage of the tournament and the U-20 World Cup in Egypt.
