D.C. United has acquired the rights to Avery John from the New England Revolution for a conditional draft pick in 2010 or 2011. The 34-year-old played with the Revs for four seasons before leaving last year to join Miami FC of USL-1.

"We are pleased to be acquiring a solid veteran defender in Avery," United general manager Dave Kasper said in a statement. "He has been a consistent performer in our League for several years, playing in many big games. Avery will make our back line stronger and we are pleased that he is now a part of D.C. United."

The Trinidad and Tobago international appeared in both the 2006 and 2007 MLS Cup finals with New England in his 75 appearances for the club. In that time he scored one goal and notched two assists.

To make room on the roster, D.C. waived striker Francis Doe. In his year-long stint with the club, Doe recorded two goals.

"We want to thank Francis for his contributions to D.C. United and we wish him the best of luck in the future," said Kasper.
