San Jose signs striker Glen; Leitch suspended

San Jose has bolstered its sputtering offense but will be without its best defender so far this season when it plays the Crew on Wednesday in Columbus.

Trinidad and Tobago striker Cornell Glen, who had arrived in San Jose for a trial two weeks ago, has been placed on the team's roster following completion of his paperwork at MLS headquarters. He played for T&T at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and has scored 22 goals in 55 international appearances. He returns to MLS from San Juan Jabloteh in his native country.

Glen, 28, scored 12 goals in 45 league appearances with New York, Los Angeles, FC Dallas, Columbus and Colorado from 2004 to 2006. To make room on the 18-man roster, the Quakes waived forward Davide Somma.

"Cornell brings a change of pace to the team that we don't have right now," said Quakes GM of soccer operations John Doyle. "He is a good all-around player."

The Quakes have been shut out in four of their nine games and are last in the Western Conference at 1-6-2.

Right back Chris Leitch has been suspended by the MLS Disciplinary Committee for injuring Houston forward Brian Ching in the Dynamo's 3-1 victory on Saturday. The committee met Tuesday and has suspended Leitch for the match in Columbus. He will also be fined an undisclosed amount.

While battling for the ball near the sideline, Ching fell to the ground under a challenge, and as he sat up, Leitch's left knee crashed into Ching's face as the Quakes defender kicked the ball.

Ching left the field, his face bloodied, but returned and lasted the full 90 minutes. Referee Alex Prus whistled for a foul on the play but didn't issue a card to Leitch, who later was substituted by Quakes coach Frank Yallop.

Jason Hernandez, the team's top defender last year, played his first game of the season in the loss to Houston and is one possible choice to fill in for Leitch.
