2010 World Cup: Day 18
Netherlands 2, Slovakia 1
Arjen Robben (2nd from right) gave Netherlands the lead with a 20-yard strike in the 18th minute, a lead the Dutch would never relinquish. The goal was Robben's second career World Cup goal, the other coming in 2006 and also in the 18th minute of a group stage match against Serbia and Montenegro.
Netherlands 2, Slovakia 1
Netherlands goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg preserved the win with two saves in the 67th minute. Stekelenburg jumped in the air to deflect a shot from Miroslav Stoch over the crossbar. After a corner kick, Slovakia's Robert Vittek found himself with an open shot, but directed it right at Stekelenburg.
Netherlands 2, Slovakia 1
Even Stekelenburg picked up a yellow card in what was an aggressively played match. In all, both teams earned a combined 36 fouls on the day. All but two of Netherlands' starters recorded fouls.
Netherlands 2, Slovakia 1
Wesley Sneijder all but sealed the win for the Netherlands in the 84th minute. The victory pushed the Dutch to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1998.
Brazil 3, Chile 0
Juan's opening goal in the 35th minute was all Brazil would need to advance to the quarterfinals. The defender easily headed in a corner kick, putting the ball into the top left corner of the goal.
Brazil 3, Chile 0
Just three minutes later, Brazil poured it on with a goal from striker Luis Fabiano. After a one-touch pass from Kaka, Fabiano scored his third goal of the tournament, stepping around Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo before angling the ball into the net.
Brazil 3, Chile 0
Chile had scored in nine consecutive World Cup matches, but the Brazil defense led by goalkeeper Julio Cesar kept them off the board. Chile didn't help its own cause, either -- it had just one shot on goal the entire match.
Brazil 3, Chile 0
Chile was whistled for the most fouls (62) and was booked for the most yellow cards (10) of any team in the group stages of the World Cup, and it continued that trend against Brazil. Chile was called for 18 fouls and three of its players were booked for yellow cards.
