The U.S. men's national team's Aron Johannsson will undergo ankle surgery before his upcoming Dutch Eredivisie season with AZ Alkmaar, reports Brian Sciaretta of American Soccer Now.

Johannsson, a forward, played in just one game during the United States' World Cup run, substituting in for Jozy Altidore against Ghana in the team's opening match after Altidore injured his hamstring. Johannsson did not appear again, and Sciaretta says it is unclear whether he suffered the injury at the World Cup or the surgery was already planned beforehand.

It isn't yet known if Johannsson will have to miss any time due to the surgery.

The 23-year-old Johannsson scored 26 total goals during a breakout 2013-14 season for AZ Alkmaar, earning an extension that will keep him under contract with the club through 2018.
