Former England manager says Wayne Rooney should be new captain
Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson endorsed Wayne Rooney as the next captain of the men's national team, BBC Sport reports.
Following captain Steven Gerrard's retirement from international play on Monday, Rooney is a leading candidate to replace him. Rooney has 95 caps with the national team. He has captained both Manchester United and, for two matches, England during his career.
Eriksson said Rooney, 28, is the ideal candidate.
"He is the right age and he's a very important player for England," the Swede told BBC Sport.
Keeper Joe Hart and center back Gary Cahill are considered to be the other possible captains if Rooney is not selected.

England finished winless in the World Cup and in last place in Group D.
Rooney will participate in Manchester United's preseason tour of the United States later this month.
