FC Cologne finished in first place in the Bundesliga second divsion last season, with 68 points, and received a promotion to the first division. Anthony Ujah and Patrick Helmes paced the scoring, with 11 goals apiece to lead the team. Helmes chipped in 5 assists as well, tying him with Daniel Halfar for the team lead.

During the offseason, the team signed Japan's Yuya Osako from 1860 Munich. Osako, 24, signed a three-year contract with the club.
