Robin van Persie said he welcomes Radamel Falcao's arrival to Manchester United, but that he's ready to fight for his place in the starting lineup, according to TheGuardian.

Falcao, 28, was loaned to United from Monaco last week for a reported $9 million fee. With the signing, Falcao becomes United's fourth player capable of playing striker, along with Wayne Rooney, James Wilson and Van Persie.

LYTTLETON: Summer transfer hits, misses

Van Persie said the team will benefit from talented strikers competing for playing time.

“I welcome his arrival, he makes us better. At a top club you should always go for the best, which also fits my philosophy.

“It is up to Falcao to fight for his place, as I have to as well. The two of us, plus Wayne Rooney and James Wilson, we must all fight it out to see who plays.”

Van Persie, 31, has had a series of knee problems recently, but dismissed the idea that the Falcao signing was completed in case Van Persie undergoes knee surgery.

“I am impressed that people have the imagination to invent something like that,” Van Persie told Foxsports.nl. “I don’t know where it comes from and I can promise that I’m not going to hospital to have an operation.”

United has opened the season winless in three games under new manager Louis van Gaal.
