Bundesliga: Hamburg holds Bayern to draw; Dortmund falls to Mainz

BERLIN (AP) — Hamburger SV held Bayern Munich to 0-0 in Josef Zinnbauer's debut as coach, while Julian Draxler scored and got sent off on his 21st birthday for nine-man Schalke in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Schalke drew 2-2 with Eintracht Frankfurt, which also had a player sent off.

Also, promoted Paderborn was provisionally top of the table after defeating Hannover 2-0. Elias Kachunga broke the deadlock in the 71st, then Moritz Stoppelkamp sealed the result deep in injury time with an audacious goal from 83 meters for a Bundesliga record.

"I didn't know I could even shoot that far," said Stoppelkamp, who beat Greek defender Giorgos Tzavelas' previous record on March 12, 2011 for Frankfurt against Schalke, by 10 meters.

Mainz defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the late game, costing the visitors the chance to go top.

Shinji Okazaki opened the scoring in the 66th when he slid in to convert Jairo's cross from close range.

Okazaki conceded a penalty three minutes later when Ciro Immobile's effort struck his arm, but Mainz 'keeper Loris Karius saved Immobile's spot kick.

Matthias Ginter's own goal made it 2-0 in the 74th, when he cut out Jairo's cross for Dortmund loan player Jonas Hofmann, only to see the ball slip inside the left post.

Dortmund substitute Henrikh Mkhitaryan struck the post in the last minute. Adrian Ramos, who missed a number of chances, struck it earlier.

"We didn't start badly. We had one or two chances," said Ginter, who lamented his "stupid own goal."

Hamburg coach Zinnbauer, who took over from the fired Mirko Slomka on Tuesday, earned the club its second point after its worst start to the Bundesliga in 51 years.

Arjen Robben was due to start for Bayern but injured himself in the warm-up and was replaced by Thomas Mueller.

The home side started well, closing down any space, and restricting Bayern's goal opportunities.

With Hamburg in the ascendency after the break, Bayern coach Pep Guardiola sent on Xabi Alonso in the 53rd to assert control. The visitors then created their best chance of the game, when Jaroslav Drobny did well to save Philipp Lahm's volley and David Alaba fired the rebound over.

Guardiola sent on Mario Goetze and Robert Lewandowski for a final offensive push with less than half an hour remaining but neither side could make the breakthrough.

"It wasn't easy to get into the game after the Champions League match against Manchester City," said Guardiola, referring to his side's late 1-0 win on Wednesday. "It was a bit better in the second half but unfortunately we didn't take our chances. We have to keep working now. There's a tough time ahead of us until December."

It was Bayern's second draw from four games, while Hamburg has yet to score this season.

"I'm proud of the team for pulling through the final 15 minutes," Zinnbauer said. "So a compliment to Mirko Slomka, who kept the team top-fit."

In Gelsenkirchen, Frankfurt midfielder Alexander Meier scored on the rebound from Ralf Faehrmann's save in the 15th and Marco Russ made it 2-0 when he eluded Schalke midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng and Christian Fuchs before shooting inside the far post.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting's calmly taken penalty gave Schalke a lifeline five minutes before the break. TV replays suggested it was a harsh decision, as Draxler's cross struck Slobodan Medojevic's arm as the Frankfurt midfielder was falling.

Draxler equalized five minutes after the restart.

Boateng earned his second yellow card in the 61st, and 10 minutes later Draxler's birthday celebrations turned sour when he kicked out at Carlos Zambrano and earned his direct red card.

Medojevic's second yellow card — his first was for the penalty decision — eased the pressure on Schalke, which is still looking for its first win of the season.

"The way the team came back was brilliant," said Schalke coach Jens Keller, whose side also came back to claim a draw at Chelsea in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Augsburg defeated Werder Bremen 4-2 and Hoffenheim won 2-0 at Stuttgart, which is bottom of the table after four games.

"Everyone in the stadium could see that the team fought, that they were better in previous games," Stuttgart coach Armin Veh said.
