After winning its opening match of group play 2-1, Liverpool will look to make it six points in two matches on Wednesday against FC Basel. The Reds, traveling to Switzerland, are favored to advance from Group B along with defending Champions League winner Real Madrid. Los Blancos dismantled FC Basel 5-1 in both teams' opening match of the group stage. Liverpool defeated Ludogorets in its opener.
In its first match, Steven Gerrard and Mario Balotelli scored for Liverpool at Anfield. FC Basel’s lone tally came from Derlis Gonzalez. But Liverpool is dealing with a number of injuries entering the squad's match against Basel, with Daniel Sturridge, Joe Allen, Philippe Coutinho, Jordan Henderson and defender Glen Johnson all questionable to play.
FC Basel will be without midfielder Marcelo Diaz, who is in the midst of a a three-match ban following his dismissal in Basel’s UEFAEuropa League quarterfinal against Valencia last season.
FC Basel was eliminated in the group stage of last season’s Champions League, going 2-2-2. Liverpool last appeared in the Champions League in 2010, when it was knocked out during group play.
