BORISOV, Belarus (AP) — Goals by Denis Polyakov and Aleksandr Karnitski gave a disciplined BATE Borisov side a 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Polyakov headed in at the far post after the ball was sent across the goalmouth by Nikolai Signevich in the 19th minute of the Group H match.

The roles were reversed when Karnitski scored from Signevich's pass in the 41st minute, with his shot wrong-footing goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz who lost his balance.

Aritz Aduriz pulled one back for Bilbao on the counterattack from a pass by Iker Munaian in the 45th.

But BATE, which was thrashed 6-0 by Porto in its group opener, held on for the three points after goalkeeper Sergei Chernik blocked a stinging long-range shot by Markel Susaeta in the 82nd.

"This is bad, they've outdone us in everything — in running, pressuring, picking up lost balls, practically in all aspects of the game. You just can't play like we did," Aduriz said. "We're aware we are in poor shape."

Signevich missed a clear chance to make it 3-1 in the 70th when he lost control of the ball just as he reached the penalty spot, sending his shot over the crossbar.

"We never got into the game properly," Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde said. "This game leaves us damaged. In our last few games we didn't win but could have done. But today we had no chance."
