Newcastle United-Swansea City Preview

Swansea will be in buoyant mood ahead of their match against Newcastle at Liberty Stadium on Saturday after starting their 2015-16 campaign with an impressive 2-2 draw at Chelsea.

The Swans twice rallied from a goal down against the defending Premier League champions and were unlucky not to come away from Stamford Bridge with all three points.

New signing Andre Ayew scored Swansea's first goal before Bafetimbi Gomis slotted home a penalty on the hour after he was brought down in the area by Blues goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who was sent off for a professional foul.

Defender Kyle Naughton believes Swansea will be able to build on their excellent performance against Chelsea.

"When you play so well in a game like we did last week against Chelsea, it's hugely important that you carry that performance into the next game," Naughton told his club's official website. "It's no good playing so well one week and not turning up in the next game.

"This weekend is another big game for us, and it's great to be back at the Liberty playing in front of our fans. With their support pushing us on, hopefully we can pick up our first win of the season and build momentum."

Newcastle also started the season with a 2-2 draw at home versus Southampton.

The Saints went ahead through a Graziano Pelle header on 24 minutes, but Papiss Cisse equalised just before the interval.

New signing Georginio Wijnaldum, who moved to St James' Park from PSV Eindhoven last month, then scored with a powerful header to give Newcastle the lead early in the second half.

The Magpies looked to be heading for victory in new manager Steve McClaren's first league match in charge, but Saints substitute Shane Long struck 10 minutes from time when he headed in a Dusan Tadic cross.

"We played very well, especially in the first half," Netherlands midfielder Wijnaldum told his club's website. "We created a few chances and if we had scored the goals we would have won the game, easily. Unfortunately that didn't happen but we cannot be too disappointed with a draw.

"The noise in the stadium was amazing. I had heard a lot of good stories about the atmosphere and the songs they sing, so to hear it properly and for my goal, was something special. I love to play for fans who really support you and help you win games, and that will definitely be the case here."

Swansea took four points off Newcastle in two high-scoring meetings last season, drawing 2-2 at home in October as Wilfried Bony and Wayne Routledge netted for the Swans while Cisse scored two equalisers for the Magpies.

The Swans then won 3-2 at St. James' Park in April as Nelson Oliveira, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jack Cork scored after Ayoze Perez had staked the Magpies to a lead. Siem De Jong netted with three minutes left, but Newcastle couldn't find an equaliser.

Overall, Swansea have won five of the eight Premier League matches between the sides, losing one and drawing two.

Newcastle have won just one of their last 12 league matches dating back to the end of last season. They have just one clean sheet in that time.

The Magpies also lost their final six away matches of last season by a combined 16-1.
