Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney is hoping to be fit for this weekend's Manchester derby against Manchester City at Etihad Stadium.

Rooney suffered an injury scare earlier this week and was seen limping at a sponsor event, according to The Guardian

There has been no word on the exact nature of Rooney's injury.

Rooney, the leading scorer in Manchester derby history, is eligible to play this weekend after serving a three-game suspension.

Manchester United is currently eighth in the Premier League with 13 points. The club has drawn its last two league matches. In Rooney's absence, the club also defeated Everton.

Manchester City is third in the Premier League with 17 points after falling to West Ham last weekend.

During his suspension, Rooney played for England in its Euro 2016 qualifiers. The forward scored two goals in England's two matches this month, including the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Estonia.

City and United have combined to win the last four league titles.
