Chelsea has signed John Terry to a one-year contract extension through the 2015-16 season, the club announced on Thursday.

Terry, 34, who has played for Chelsea since debuting in 1998, owns the club record for goals by a defender with 63 and has made 661 appearances. Terry has played in 29 Premier League matches this season, helping the club to its first-place standing.

Earlier this month, manager Jose Mourinho guaranteed that Terry would return to the team next season.

“I'm delighted to have signed an extension to my contract with Chelsea,” Terry said. “After adding another major trophy to my collection this month I hope myself, the players and manager can continue to bring success to our club. Playing for this great club makes me so proud. And as always I would like to thank the fans who have continually supported me.”

Chelsea has a 20-7-2 record and 67 points, six ahead of second-place Manchester City. The Blues also have a game in hand.

The club’s next match is on April 4 against Stoke City.
