Schweinsteiger joins Bayern Munich's injured list prior to cup quarterfinal

MUNICH (AP) — Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger will miss the German Cup quarterfinal against Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday because of an ankle injury.

Schweinsteiger was hurt in Bayern's 1-0 Bundesliga victory over Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

Bayern coach Pep Guardiola says Schweinsteiger "definitely won't play."

The cup holder is already without wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben, and midfielder David Alaba, as well as backup goalkeeper Tom Starke. But defender Holger Badstuber will return to the squad.

Guardiola says the absences "are no excuse," and that he is "motivated to find solutions."

Bayern, a 17-time German Cup winner, is eyeing a repeat of the 2013 treble-winning season. Guardiola's team is close to clinching the Bundesliga title, and is also in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, where it plays Porto.
