A deceased referee was “assigned” to officiate a soccer match in Nigeria as the country’s football federation goes through turmoil in its leadership, according to the BBC.

Wale Akinsanya, a referee in the Nigerian soccer league who passed away in January, was picked to referee a match between the Warri Wolves and Giwa FC by Chris Giwa, who was recently appointed by Nigerian courts to take over as the president of the Nigerian Football Federation.

The current president, Amaju Pinnick, has so far refused to step down from the position. He is officially recognized as the president by FIFA.

FIFA has issued a warning to the country that Pinnick must stay in charge of the NFF, meaning that he may also appoint referees for the disputed match.
