Arsenal are set to challenge Liverpool in the pursuit of Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk this summer, but reports suggest the Dutchman has already made up his mind on the club he wants to join next.

Van Dijk nearly joined the Reds earlier this summer before the Saints reported Liverpool to the Premier League for making an illegal approach, prompting the Anfield club to make a public apology and confirm they had withdrawn from the race. Liverpool were widely tipped to complete his signing even while the likes of Chelsea, Man City and the Gunners have also been linked.

But while Arsenal are reported by the Express to be ready to lodge a £45m offer if Alexis Sanchez leaves the club, Van Dijk is still said to be decided that Liverpool are the club he wants to sign for. And the 26-year-old is even considering handing in a transfer request to make sure he gets his way.

Southampton had earlier this summer slapped a £75m price tag on the player given the huge interest in him - crazy considering Leonardo Bonucci has just moved to AC Milan for less than half of that figure - but Liverpool could land Van Dijk for closer to £60m.

Liverpool are also looking at signing dynamic central midfielder Naby Keita from RB Leipzig, but Van Dijk is among their top targets too as Jurgen Klopp looks to solidify his defence so Liverpool can form a strong title challenge going into the new campaign.

The club have so far signed Mohamed Salah and Dominic Solanke, while Hull City full back Andy Robertson is also tipped to be moving to Merseyside in the near future.
