Barcelona-born winger Victor Fernandez has his eyes set on the first team at Newcastle United, after receiving a 'surprise' call from Rafa Benitez to join the squad for the pre-season trip to Ireland.

The 19-year-old Newcastle Under-23s starlet, who the Magpies signed from UE Cornellå Youth, is now in with a chance of making his first-team debut at Preston North End at the end of the week.

He revealed, as quoted by the Newcastle Chronicle, how eager he is to impress during the Magpies pre-season trip, following his last minute call-up.

"Two days ago I got an email saying I needed to be at the airport at 3pm. I didn't know it was for the first team and didn't know what was happening," he said.

"Then I found out I was going with the first team and I was really happy. It was a big surprise, but I am very happy."

The youngster, who has been plying his trade with the club's Under-23s, spoke of how determined he was to capitalise on this opportunity.

"To learn from players of this level is really good for me. Playing with the Under-23's is good, but Premier League players can teach you a lot," he added.
