With Newcastle United quickly returning to the Premier League, Toon boss Rafael Benitez is keen to bolster his squad and one of his top targets is Hull midfielder Sam Clucas.

The 26-year-old impressed in his first Premier League season in the previous campaign as one of Hull's shining stars in their dismal stay in the top flight.

According to The Sun, Clucas is keen on returning to the Premier League and Newcastle are looking to provide a platform for that to happen. Clucas also caught the attention of England boss Gareth Southgate, who sent scouts to watch the midfielder last season.

However, Hull's new boss Leonid Slutsky, formerly the manager of the Russian national team is reluctant to sell. The Tigers are looking to keep their best assets but Benitez will be hoping that a £4m offer will entice Slutsky to do business.

Benitez would like to add Clucas to his summer transfer acquisitions along with Javier Manquillo, who recently arrived from Atletico Madrid for £4.5m and featured for close rivals Sunderland last season.

Benitez has also added England Under-21 winger Jacob Murphy from Norwich for £12m and made Christian Atsu's loan deal permanent. Atsu had various loan spells whilst he was signed for Chelsea, including featuring for Everton and Bournemouth.

Murphy recently featured for England at the Under-21 European Championships where he scored against Poland in the quarter-final. Benitez will be hoping for more of the same as Newcastle look to re-cement their status as a Premier League side.
