The Reason Why Arsenal Needed Conte's Permission to Sub on Olivier Giroud in Their Pre-Season Clash

Monday July 24th, 2017

Chelsea and Arsenal's friendly clash on Saturday ended with a comfortable 3-0 win for the Blues at the Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing.

The game included a deadly brace by the in-form Michy Batshuayi, with Willian also getting in on the scoring for Chelsea.

Conte was keen on bringing on a youthful squad during the match and gave long forgotten striker Loic Remy some game time against Arsenal.

Newly signed Lacazette showed a dip in form for the Gunners during the game so Wenger decided that he wanted to bring on the more experienced Olivier Giroud.

However, Chinese officials had denied Arsenal the substitution as Giroud was not on the team sheet and so, Arsenal staff member Vic Akers went to Antonio Conte to get permission for the Frenchman to be subbed on, GMS understands.

Though the substitution went through, Giroud's effort could not help Arsenal to bounce back from their three-goal deficit against Chelsea.

The fact that Chelsea weren't even using their strongest side during this pre-season game should come with some concern to Arsenal fans as the Gunners look forward to next season's title race come August.
