Manchester United manager José Mourinho has revealed the manner in which Nemanja Matić's agent revealed the Serbian superstar was eager to move to Old Trafford in the summer. Since making the shock switch from Chelsea to Mourinho's new side, the 29-year-old has been in sensational form, playing the role of midfield enforcer with aplomb.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of his side's crucial Premier League clash against Chelsea on Sunday, via the Mirror, the 'Special One' was quizzed on how he managed to pluck the robust midfielder from their domestic rivals. Mourinho said:
"I was surprised when (Matic’s) agent called me to say 'do you want him?'.
Two big questions of our time:— Jan Aage Fjortoft (@JanAageFjortoft) November 2, 2017
Why did Russia sell Alaska to USA?
Why did Chelsea sell Matic to
"I was surprised, but he’s an agent I know well. Normally he’s very direct and objective, he doesn’t waste time. He doesn’t try to get people to be interested in his players to improve their situation at their club.
"Normally he’s very straightforward, so when he told me 'you can have him if you want', of course I want."
Many eyebrows were raised when Chelsea agreed to sell Matić to a divisional rival in the summer, when they were believed to have had the option to offload the player to Serie A giants Juventus. In effect, Chelsea have handed their title rivals the solidity in midfield they were crying out for last season, while the Blues themselves are depleted of quality midfield options.
Mourinho will be desperate for a better result than his last Premier League visit to Stamford Bridge, where Antonio Conte's side destroyed their opposition in a 4-0 thrashing. Conte enraged the Portuguese coach with his wild celebrations of the touchline, and there's no doubt that Mourinho will be out for revenge in Sunday's massive match.
