Spurs' supporters have been given a huge boost as they head into this weekend's north London derby with news that pivotal defender Jan Vertonghen is fit and ready to face their fiercest league rivals.

The central defender suffered a heel injury sustained in training while away on international duty with Belgium.

The injury was enough to force him out of Friday's entertaining 3-3 draw with Mexico, however, he has returned to training and is available for selection for Tuesday's fixture against Japan.

Reported in football.london, Vertonghen is one of a few Premier League players that will return to action for Belgium with Liverpool's Simon Mignolet and Watford's Christian Kabasele all likely starters.

The positive news coming from the Belgium camp about the Spurs' defender's level of fitness  will certainly reassure his club manager Mauricio Pochettino and the legion of supporters, especially with them fearing last week that the defender would have to sit out Saturday's crucial Premier League clash against Arsenal at the Emirates stadium.

Despite the one injury boost of Vertonghen's returning fitness, it looks like Spurs will have to do without his defensive partner in Toby Alderweireld due to the troublesome hamstring injury he picked up in the 3-1 win victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Nevertheless, the depth in Tottenham Hotspur's squad, over recent seasons, has shown that they can now cope with such a loss.

Pochettino has a group of players that are all equally proficient and experienced, so any player lost through injury or suspension is replaced with a player that has confidence and a high level of expectation.
