Virgil Van Dijk was the subject of much transfer speculation over the summer, namely at the hands of Liverpool. Reds legend John Aldridge believes that the Merseysiders should try and make an impression on Van Dijk when they take on Southampton on Saturday.
Van Dijk was Klopp’s number one centre-back target, but was forced to retract his interest after being accused of tapping up the Dutchman.
Despite this, Klopp still remains interested in acquiring his services especially as Liverpool’s defensive frailties have reared their ugly heads yet again.
Aldridge believes this is the perfect opportunity to plant the seeds in Van Dijk’s head by making a significant impression on him. Aldridge said in the Express:
“There's going to be one name on everybody's lips this weekend, isn't there? Liverpool might be facing Southampton, but a lot of the focus will fall on you-know-who. Look, it's going to be a difficult afternoon for Virgil van Dijk.”
Aldridge continued to wax eloquently saying: “He's professional and he has to do his job for his current team, but it's a strange situation.
"We're desperate for him, he's desperate for us, everyone knows it. We all want to see him at Anfield on a full-time basis because he fits the criteria of what we need.”
Despite all this, Van Dijk is a Southampton player and will remain so for the foreseeable future. He will have an unenviable task of shutting out the Liverpool attack which has shown signs this season of being a real threat when everything is firing on all cylinders.
