Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has backed the Reds to sign Arsenal's Jack Wilshere in January, claiming that either Jordan Henderson or Georginio Wijnaldum could make way for the 25-year-old in midfield. Wilshere's contract with the Gunners expires in the summer, meaning that Liverpool could snap the playmaker up for a bargain price in the January transfer window.
Speaking on the Soccer Saturday panel, via the Express, Thompson was asked whether he thought Wilshere was a good fit for Jürgen Klopp's side, and claimed: "With his fitness, I would take him. I would, at Liverpool. I think he’s got that much ability, I’ve always even a great lover of him.
“We have players like Wijnaldum in there, where they play more central. If it was Wijnaldum (who he replaced), it would give him great opportunities. I’m just thinking, even there (at Arsenal) he’s played as a holding one. Even Jordan, Jordan’s had a lot of injuries himself."
"I just think he has that quality and on most days, probably more than some of them and we’re talking about (Mesut) Ozil and how many times he turns up, I think you get more. When he’s fit, I think you get more from Jack Wilshere, even playing in an advanced role. I think he’s a great player, I really do. Low centre of gravity, keeps the ball very very well."
Liverpool currently sit fifth in the Premier League table, 12 points behind current leaders Manchester City. The Reds' defensive calamities have seen them throw away a multitude of matches, and their fans may well question whether prioritising the signing of a new midfielder over a competent defender is a wise move for the club.
