Marco Silva has given fans reason to believe that he has placed his faith in Andre Carrillo, despite the Watford loanee failing to hit the heights at Vicarage Road since joining from Benfica in the summer.

The 26-year-old Peruvian has shown glimpses of brilliance this season, but hasn't really had an overall dominant performance as yet.

Silva, though, reckons the player needs confidence and time.

"I know Carrillo very well. When he came here, he had a fantastic impact in our team," the coach said, via the Hertfordshire Mercury. "And in the Premier League – a lot of players and clubs don’t know him.

"I know him well, he needs confidence and hasn’t played many games in the past two years for a player of his quality. He had a fantastic impact, and in every moment he’s started to grow."

The manager also noted that Carrillo's involvement with the Peru national side has had some part to play in his so-far subdued showings.

"He went to the national team for ten days and lost time with us. Everything’s different there, and all that time we lost with him is not good for us - him or me. It’s our obligation though," he pointed out.

"Even when he went to the national team in October, we changed formation and worked over the break. He missed out on some important moments in training - he knows how I work though.

"When you play with five at the back, you need one player to play more inside, not like a right winger. So I tried to do that with Will [Hughes] or [Roberto] Pereyra, but Carrillo can play too because if he stays in good form, he can change a game."
