MLS Recap: Alphonso Davies Leads Vancouver's Rout of Orlando City
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP)—Teenager Alphonso Davies scored a goal and had a team-record three assists to help the Vancouver Whitecaps beat Orlando City 5-2 on Saturday night.
The 17-year-old Davis snapped a 1-1 tie in the 76th minute. Midfielder Jordon Mutch took a shot that goalkeeper Joe Bendik stopped with a diving save. Davies scored on the rebound.
Striker Kei Kamara scored twice for Vancouver (6-5-5), once on a penalty kick in the 85th minute, to break out of a scoring drought. Yordy Reyna and Nicolas Mezquida also connected.
Forward Sacha Kljestan scored for Orlando (6-7-1) when the Lions were playing with just 10 men. Mohamed El-Munir was sent off after receiving his second yellow card in the 58th minute. Dominic Dwyer scored Orlando's other goal four minutes into injury time.
Davies made a pretty run to set up Kamara's goal in the 36th minute. He stole the ball near midfield, made several nifty moves to get past three Orlando players, then passed to Kamara. Davies also made pretty passes to set up goals by Reyna in the 87th and Mezquida in the 90th.
NYCFC 1, Atlanta 1
NEW YORK (AP)—Alexander Callens tied it in the 77th minute and New York City FC settled for a 1-1 draw with Atlanta United on Saturday in a matchup of two of the top Eastern Conference teams.
Callens scored on a header to finish David Villa's header flick of Maximiliano Moralez's corner.
NYCFC (8-3-4) had two shots crash off the post after the 80th minute and finished the game with a 10-2 advantage in shots on target.
Josef Martinez opened the scoring for Atlanta United (9-3-3) in the 48th minute with his league-leading 13th goal of the season.
Brad Guzan had nine saves for Atlanta United.
Columbus 1, New York 1
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)—Alex Muyl tied it with a header in the 57th minute and the New York Red Bulls held on for a 1-1 draw with the Columbus Crew on Saturday.
Muyl scored for the Red Bulls (7-4-2) on Marc Rzatkowski's corner, beating backup goalkeeper Jon Kempin to the ball and heading it over the top of Kempin for the goal. Kempin replaced Crew (7-3-4) starter Zack Steffen who was on international duty for the U.S. men's national team in its friendly against France on Saturday.
Gyasi Zardes opened the scoring with his 10th goal of the season in the 26th minute with a strong header to finish Harrison Afful's looping cross from the end line.
Columbus extended its unbeaten streak to nine.
New England 1, Chicago 1
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (AP)—Teal Bunbury scored his ninth goal of the season to lift the New England Revolution to a 1-1 draw with the Chicago Fire on Saturday night.
New England (6-4-4) is unbeaten in its last four games and has just one loss in its last six.
Bunbury, who tied his career high for goals in a season, tied it in the 82nd minute. Chicago goalkeeper Richard Sanchez mishandled a high ball along the goal line and Diego Fagundez tapped it to a charging Bunbury who finished into an open net from the top of the six-yard box.
The Fire's Bastian Schweinsteiger tapped it to Aleksandar Katai, who dropped it back to Schweinsteiger at the top of the box, where he first-timed a right-footer into the net to make it 1-0 in the 63rd minute.
Sanchez had five saves for Chicago (5-7-2).
Dallas 2, Montreal 0
FRISCO, Texas (AP)—Mauro Diaz scored and FC Dallas beat the Montreal Impact 2-0 on Saturday night for its fourth straight victory.
Montreal's Matteo Mancuso put Dallas up 1-0 with an own goal in the fifth minute. The ball ricocheted off his head when a teammate attempted to clear Diaz's indirect free-kick with his own header.
Dallas was initially ruled offside on the play, but after video review, the goal stood when Montreal was determined to have made first contact. Diaz scored for Dallas (14-7-1) in the 18th minute on a penalty kick after Maxi Urruti drew a penalty on Rudy Camacho in the box.
Montreal (4-11-0) nearly avoided the shutout when Mancosu banged a shot off the post from the right side of the box at the 50th minute just before halftime. The Impact have scored just once in their last five contests.
Houston 2, Colorado 0
HOUSTON (AP)—Tomas Martinez scored in the 30th minute and the Houston Dynamo beat the Colorado Rapids 2-0 on Saturday night to snap a two-game losing streak.
Martinez stole the ball from Johan Blomberg, split two more defensemen and launched a shot with his left foot that Tim Howard saved. But the ball returned to Martinez off the ricochet and he punched it in off the rebound with his right past an off-balance Howard.
Mauro Manotas added to the lead on a penalty kick six minutes later after Johan Blomberg took down DaMarcus Beasley inside the box. Yannick Boli was sent off on a red for hands to the face of Leonardo in the first half of stoppage time.
Houston improved to 5-5-3. Colorado (2-9-2) has lost eight straight games.
Seattle 2, D.C. 1
SEATTLE (AP)—Nicolas Lodeiro ended a 362-minute Seattle scoreless drought in the 57th minute, and Magnus Wolff Eikrem headed in the winner in the 83rd on Saturday night as the Sounders rallied to beat D.C. United 2-1.
Seattle (3-7-2) had not scored since Handwalla Bwana's tally in the 54th minute of a 2-1 win at Toronto on May 9. Since then, the Sounders were blanked by Portland and twice by Real Salt Lake.
The 362 minutes tied a club record for the longest dry spell between goals, originally set over the course of six games from July 11-Aug, 9, 2015.
Lodeiro's shot from the top of the penalty area restraining arc tied the game just four minutes after Darren Mattocks had put D.C. in front. It was the first goal of the season for Lodeiro, who rejoined the team this week after not making Uruguay's 23-man World Cup squad.
Cristian Roldan set up Eikrem's first of the year. He crossed a target ball into the box from the right side. Eikrem met it at the penalty spot and headed it past United keeper David Oustad into the right corner.
The goal by Mattocks in the 53rd minute was his sixth the season for D.C. (2-6-3).
LA 3, Salt Lake 0
CARSON, Calif. (AP)—Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice to help the Los Angeles Galaxy beat Real Salt Lake 3-0 on Saturday night
Salt Lake City (7-6-1) had its three-game win streak snapped.
Ibrahimovic put away a header in the 61st minute to open the scoring. Goalkeeper Nick Rimando's punch of a cross by Chris Pontius deflected directly to Ibrahimovic for the point-plank finish into an empty net. Moments earlier, Salt Lake City's Justen Glad blocked what looked like a certain goal for the Galaxy, slipping behind a pair of L.A. players to deflect it at the goal line.
Ibrahimovic outdueled Glad at the top of the 6-yard box and side-netter a header off an entry by Servando Carrasco from 35-yards out to give the Galaxy (5-7-2) a 2-0 lead in the 67th.
Ola Kamara rolled a left-footer past Rimando from the top of the area to cap the scoring in the 77th minute.
Portland 0, Kansas City 0
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)—Goalkeepers Jeff Attinella of Portland and Tim Melia of Sporting KC each made four saves, and the two teams played to a scoreless tie on Saturday night.
Sporting KC (8-2-5) and Portland (6-3-4) entered the match not having lost since April. The Timbers are unbeaten in their last seven games and Kansas City now has gone six games without defeat.
An outstretched Attinella made a fingertip save against Graham Zusi from the right side of the box, while Melia made a last-second save off a header by Fanendo Adi.
Both teams had chances to score. Kansas City's Daniel Salloi missed the mark at the 40th minute when his shot caromed off the crossbar from the right side of the box. Near the 82nd minute, Portland's Sebastian Blanco rifled a shot from the left side of the box that sailed over the crossbar.
LAFC 4, San Jose 3
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP)—Adama Diomande had two goals, Joao Moutinho scored in stoppage time and Los Angeles FC rallied past the San Jose Earthquakes 4-3 on Saturday night.
Diomande, who signed with LAFC on May 2 and made his first start against San Jose, has three goals in three MLS appearances.
Moutinho, a 20-year-old rookie defender, kicked in his first MLS goal from just inside the penalty area to give LAFC (7-4-3) a 4-3 lead in the seventh minute of injury time.
San Jose's Valeri Qazaishvili opened the scoring in the 11th minute, putting away a left-footed volley off an arcing entry by Danny Hoesen.
Diomande and Steven Beitashour answered with goals in the 15th and 19th minutes, respectively, to give LA a 2-1 lead.
Two goals by Chris Wondolowski, in the 52nd and 63rd, put San Jose (2-9-3) back in front before Diomande scored from point-blank range in the 90th minute. Beitashour, from the left side, sent an entry toward the far post where Walker Zimmerman played a sliding cross to Diomande for the empty-net finish.
LAFC snapped a four-game winless streak.
The Earthquakes have lost four in a row—their longest such streak since 2015—and are winless in their last five games.
San Jose's Kevin Partida was shown a red card in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
