Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has claimed trophies aren't everything as Jose Mourinho took aim at the Merseyside club for their lack of silverware in recent years.

The Reds have reinstated themselves among Europe's elite since Klopp joined them in 2015, reaching two European finals.

However, while they failed to win either, Klopp has claimed that the club's progress cannot simply be measured in sliverware, or the lack thereof.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference as quoted by The Guardian, the German accepted Mourinho's 'trophies matter' dig, but insisted there was more to life than winning.

He said: "If people say the Champions League campaign last season was not a success because we didn’t win the final then I cannot change that. Was it the most successful? No, but the ride was brilliant. I enjoyed it a lot.

“Going to the final was fantastic but in life – in all departments of life, including your job – if only the best counts and effort doesn’t count then life is s**t."

Liverpool are currently unbeaten in the Premier League this season, and look set to challenge Pep Guardiola's Manchester City for their crown come the end of the season. But Klopp reiterated that the foundations are in place for the Reds to challenge not just this season, but for years to come.

He added: “The club, the team, the size of the fanbase, the manager as a combination: we should be successful.

"The level we’re at now is only the basis for this club to go again. That’s what we want to do. For that we need good footballers and we’ve got that. We have to try everything we can to be successful.”
