Chelsea will pursue Sergio Rico should Courtois depart

Chelsea will pursue Sevilla goalkeeper, Sergio Rico, should Thibaut Courtois depart for Real Madrid, according to AS journalist and Sky Sports La Liga expert, Guillem Balague.

Courtois has eighteen months remaining on his current contract and rejected Chelsea’s opening offer that failed to meet his demands of approximately £200,000 per week. Significant progress is yet to be made despite negotiations continuing between the Club and Courtois’ representatives. Courtois is open to a move to the Spanish capital since it would mean he is closer to his children who currently live with his former partner.

Should Courtois leave, Chelsea are interested in two goalkeepers: Sergio Rico of Sevilla and Jan Oblak of Atletico Madrid. Chelsea were first interested in the Sevilla goalkeeper in October 2016 and have continued to monitor his performances.

Rico, 24, established himself as Sevilla’s number one goalkeeper and has made 139 appearances for the Spanish side. He made his debut for the Spanish national team in a 6-1 victory in a warm up fixture against South Korea ahead of Euro 2016.

Real Madrid have already secured the signing of Athletic Bilbao’s Kepa Arrizabalaga in January and are looking to replace both Keylor Navas and Kiko Casilla. Compared to last season, Navas has underwhelmed and has only recently returned due to injury.
