According to David Ornstein of the BBC, Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain has rejected a move to Chelsea. The player turned down Chelsea and favours a move to Liverpool. Should Liverpool not come in for Chamberlain, he will remain at Arsenal and see out the remainder of his contract.
It is also reported that Oxlade-Chamberlain was unhappy playing the wing-back role following Arsenal reverting to a back three after an embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at the back end of last season. Chamberlain is fearful that he will be deployed in the right wing-back role should he make the switch across London to join Chelsea. Chamberlain wants to play in a central midfield trio and believes Liverpool is the best option for him to achieve this.
Chamberlain’s remarkable decision comes as a seriously bitter blow to Antonio Conte, especially with so little time remaining. There is under two days now remaining in the transfer window and Chelsea will have to look within their contingency plans. It looks like that Chelsea will be missing out on an extremely versatile player - Chamberlain can be played as a wing-back, a central midfielder and be rotated with Willian and Pedro as a winger. The signing was also crucial in fulfilling the necessary home-grown quota in the Champions League following the permanent departure of Nathaniel Chalobah and loan departures of Loftus-Cheek and Lewis Baker.
Chamberlain's rejection causes some embarrassment for the Club since it is a player rejecting the Premier League champions but Chelsea cannot dwell if they are to secure other targets before the Thursday 11 pm deadline.
