Frank Lampard reveals extent of Ross Barkley's ankle injury after Chelsea narrow 1-0 victory over Newcastle United

Despite another injury for Frank Lampard to contend with, Chelsea got the job done at Stamford Bridge on Saturday after Marcos Alonso's low effort was the difference in the 1-0 win over Steve Bruce's Newcastle United side.

It wasn't an easy win for the Blues, far from it, but the victory sees Chelsea collect their fifth consecutive win this season in all competitions.

But there was more bad news for head coach Frank Lampard on the injury front. Ross Barkley had to be replaced just before half-time after he picked up an ankle injury.

Lampard gave an update on the 25-year-old's injury: "Ross [Barkley] has turned his ankle. It looks nasty at first glance but the doctor will look tomorrow.

Barkley could now join N'Golo Kante, Andreas Christensen and Ruben Loftus-Cheek on the sidelines.

His replacement Mateo Kovacic, who was a doubt after he picked up a knock on international duty, came on and produced a brilliant performance when he came on.

Frank Lampard recognised the Croatian's impressive display, and said his performance 'was outstanding.

Next up for Chelsea is a trip to Holland for a Champions League clash with Ajax on Wednesday.

No. 1-1

I thought he started OK before he got hurt, then he was invisible for much of the rest of the half.
