How Chelsea may reshuffle to add Van Dijk

The Times broke the news on Thursday evening that Chelsea are about to bid £50 million to land the services of Southampton centre back Virgil Van Dijk, who is insisting on a move away from St Mary's and has allegedly been training alone.

The Dutch Internationals preferred destination was thought to be Liverpool, however, they have stated that they are no longer pursuing him, which has left the door open for Chelsea.

The alleged move has come as a surprise to many Chelsea supporters as most were in agreement that with the addition of Antonio Rudiger and the recall of Andreas Christensen, the centre back position looked set.

It appears though that if a player of Van Dijk's calibre comes available then the main consensus from the fans is why not bring him in. I'm not so sure.

So where would he fit in, in a position that actually looks one of the most fullest in the squad?

Well, there has been talk that Christensen could leave, with Inter being interested. For me, this must not happen, he has too much talent to allow to go. But if Van Dijk arrives, this really could be a possibility as it was alleged that Christensen wants regular first team football or a move away from Stamford Bridge.

There is the option of pushing Cesar Azpilicueta to the right wing back position, which could work well. Although personally I've always preferred him as a centre back.

That would leave David Luiz, Antonio Rudiger, Gary Cahill, Andreas Christensen and Virgil van Dijk all competing for 3 positions. It's good to have backup for sure, but would any of these players be happy sitting out? Absolutely not.

Cahill has just been named Club Captain, Rudiger has just had a lot of time and money spent on his arrival, Luiz the same last season. So if this move was to happen I can only see Cahill and Christensen missing out.

Luiz could obviously fill in at centre midfield should we suffer injuries there and fail to sign anyone else, as he does play there for Brazil. But he's always going to be a defender first.

To sum it up, Van Dijk would be a class signing, but is it really needed when we should be using that money on wing backs and backup central midfielders?
