Chelsea have had a long-standing interest in Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk however the transfer saga surrounding the Dutchman is now finally over.

The Telegraph reported earlier in the day that Liverpool have had a world-record offer of £75m accepted for the Saints defender.

But now Liverpool have confirmed the deal in place between the two clubs which is believed to be around £75m.

It was a chaotic summer for Southampton with Chelsea and the Merseyside club chasing after Van Dijk, and the player's head soon turned as he wanted an exit, and as a result of that, he handed in a formal transfer request.

That was quickly rejected as the south coast club stood firm with the defender and despite offers coming in from Chelsea and Liverpool, the refused to let go of their biggest asset.

It looked as though Manchester City would compete for his signature in January, however the deal looks all but complete.

But Chelsea fans have nothing to be disappointed about. Andreas Christensen has been given his chance and is now flourishing week on week.

That price tag as well, hefty. Time will tell if it pays off.
