Matic departs: A look at whats left and potential understudies

Nemanja Matic has today completed his £40m move to Manchester United on a 3-year deal, and all of a sudden the the current Chelsea squad is looking very thin.

Antonio Conte has reportedly grown frustrated at the lack of personnel arriving and has demanded more signings. Many publications have reported that The Blues will still bring in 4 more signings during this window.

But what if the worst happened and we had to start our season with what's left? Here I weigh up potential understudies and players who could fill in.

Goalkeepers are fine, we have Thibaut Courtois, Willy Caballero and Eduardo.

Right Back/Wing back -

Victor Moses, Cesar Azpilicueta, Fikayo Tomori, Willian.

Left Back/Wingback -

Marcos Alonso, Kenedy (!?), Cesar Azpilicueta and Pedro.

Centre Backs -

Gary Cahill, Antonio Rudiger, Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz, Andreas Christensen, Fikayo Tomori.

Centre Midfielders -

N'Golo Kante, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Cesc Fabregas, Lewis Baker, David Luiz.

Attacking Midfielders -

Cesc Fabregas, Willian, Pedro, Eden Hazard, Jeremie Boga, Charly Musonda, Lewis Baker.

Centre Forwards -

Alvaro Morata, Michy Batshuayi.

There are others like Diego Costa, Loic Remy, Jake Clarke-Salter etc but they are all expected to leave on loan or permanently. The likes of Baker, Tomori, Musonda and Boga are also not certain to stay in this squad just yet, although it would seem Musonda is.

When you think the likes of Azpilicueta can play at centre back, left back and right back, he provides decent cover for Moses and Alonso. Luiz can do the same in central midfield, he plays there for his country.

So if the youngsters stay and we added a few more instead of sending them on loan, then the numbers don't concern me, apart from centre midfield.

However, the quality and experience does concern me. It concerns me quite a lot actually. I am all for giving youth the chance, I've been an advocate for that. But it's far too much of a risk to take if we do not sign anyone else, especially taking into account Champions League football this season.

But I truly believe we will, there will be at least 3 more signings coming in. They might not be the names that everyone is all crying out for, but at the very least they will carry Premier League and International experience.

I predict, Ryan Bertrand, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Fernando Llorente will all arrive in the next few weeks. It might not be a popular choice and it's not necessarily who I want, but I can see them arriving.
