Trent Alexander-Arnold netted a late winner to give Liverpool their first win at Anfield since December 16, 2020.
Ollie Watkins goal on the stroke of half-time was somewhat against the run of play and shortly before the break controversy struck as Roberto Firmino's goal was ruled out by VAR for an offside in the build-up.
Shortly after the break, Mohamed Salah headed home the rebound from Andy Robertson's left-footed strike after Emi Martinez parried it into the Egyptian's path.
Villa, who were on the back foot for the majority of the second half, mounted a counter-attack and were close to regaining the lead only to be denied by the woodwork.
After the hard fought win James Milner, who captained the Reds in Jordan Henderson's absence spoke to Match Of The Day and highlighted the importance of Liverpool digging in to find the win.
"It was an important performance, it wasn't our best by any means. Decisions seemed to go against us but that's the way it is. We have to stick it out and find a way.
"They have got players, they are well organised and they are tough to beat." making today's victory for Liverpool all that much bigger." Milner said.
Liverpool face a tough test against Real Madrid in Anfield on Wednesday going into Los Blancos visit to Anfield 3-1 down.
The win momentarily lifted Jurgen Klopp's side into the top four and the importance of those places and getting results is not lost on Milner or his team-mates: "It's nice to be in around the Champions League spots but the most important thing is we concentrate on ourselves and try and get back to that consistent level."
They will be hoping to take this momentum into the Champions League tie against Madrid and beyond as they continue their battle to remain in Europe next season.
