In another blockbuster Champions League night out at Merseyside, Liverpool took on Real Madrid C.F., Spain's most successful clubs, in their bid to secure a place in this season's semi finals.

The Los Blancos entered the match with a 3-1 advantage. A 2-0 win by Liverpool, or a win by three or more goals, incase the opposition manage to get an away goal, was needed to knock out the Spaniards from Europe's most elite completion.

There was only one change tonight from the side that won 2-1 against Aston Villa in the weekend, Sadio Mané coming in for Diogo Jota.

The biggest surprise in the lineup, though, was the third consecutive dropping of Thiago Alcantara, who played well after coming on as a substitute in the last two matches. Despite rumours of Kostas Tsimikas starting, the backbone remained unchanged.

It was a frustrating night, a night which reeked of Atletico de Madrid at home at reason. Despite countless chances, despite dominating for most of the game, Liverpool were not clinical enough and the game ended 0-0. Liverpool's mistakes last week in Madrid came back to haunt them as they crashed out of the Champions League 1-3 on aggregate. A campaign ending in heartbreak.

Here are the player ratings.

ALISSON BECKER 7

Didn't have much to do tonight but did his job brilliantly. His double save kept us in the game.

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD 8

Did everything. Defended well, attacked well. Such a pity this performance came in a draw which knocked his team out.

OZAN KABAK 7

Was alright, although was suspicious at times. Got substituted in a surprising manner.

NATHANIEL PHILLIPS 7

Like Kabak, did his trade well. Was caught out at times but made up for it.

ANDREW ROBERTSON 7.5

Played decently but could have done better in the second half.

FABINHO TAVARES 7

He did a very good job at protecting  the centre backs, a position he performed well in after he was asked to slot in there.

JAMES MILNER 7

Played with all his heart while on the pitch. Proper captain's performance.

GEORGINIO WJINALDUM6.5

Bar sudden bursts if energy, he had a sub par game. He squandered a glaring chance to make it 1-0 to Liverpool before half time.

SADIO MANÉ 6

Started the game so brightly, perhaps his best start to a game this season, then he just fizzled out.

ROBERTO FIRMINO 6

He was hardly seen in the game, except when we saw him deliver a poor pass to Trent Alexander-Arnold in the first half.

MOHAMED SALAH 6.5

His early chance could have made things so different. He missed another one in the first half as the frustration continued in the second half.

SUBSTITUTES

THIAGO ALCANTARA 5

Didn't make the impact we thought he would make at all.

DIOGO JOTA 5.5

Similar to Jota, he couldn't do what he was brought on to do.
