Liverpool were very impressive against Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.
Various players caught the eye, however, one in particular stood out from the rest. That one was unsurprisingly Virgil van Dijk (on his 100th Premier League appearance for Liverpool).
We all know what Van Dijk brings to Liverpool - the pace, the power, the strength - he has everything. His presence alone made the Palace attackers hesitate. This is something that might not have been the case last season.
On top of his spectacular defensive display, he also set up Mohamed Salah's 78th minute volley. Van Dijk rose up for the header and flicked it on to Salah in the six yard box, who smashed it past Guaita.
Since Van Dijk's return to the defence, he has helped the reds keep four clean sheets in five games in the Premier League. The return of Joel Matip has also been significant in this defensive record, although today Ibrahima Konaté was given the nod.
Another significant reason for Van Dijk getting MOTM is because of his long balls out from the back that were once again seen today. He attempted five of them and four were successful. This helps get the ball to the wide players as quickly as possible and allows the team to build an attack.
With Van Dijk fully fit at the back, the reds stand every chance of going all the way this season. He is just everything and more you would want from a modern centre-half, realistically there is nothing he can't do. There is no need to get carried away but with him in the team anything is possible and there is no limit, as we have seen over the past few seasons.
Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konaté and Jordan Henderson all deserve honourable mentions but none of them could match the Dutchman's standards.
