Liverpool face Southampton this weekend. How did the last match go?

In the midst of a bad run, Liverpool find themselves playing the most out-of-form team in the entire League. Opposition Southampton have won just three Premier League games in 2021, the first being against Liverpool.

The defeat was arguably the start of the downfall for Liverpool, with the Reds only winning one in their next four following the game, with that being the FA Cup game against Aston Villa's youth side.

The game was a dull 1-0 result with former Liverpool player Danny Ings scoring the winner in the second minute after getting on the end of a James Ward-Prowse free-kick.

The Saints were unlucky not to make it two just minutes later with youngster Nathan Tella firing just wide of the right-hand post after beating two Liverpool defenders.  In typical Liverpool fashion, the Reds went on to dominate the game, having 67% of the ball and playing almost double the number of passes than their opposition.

The Reds did manage to fire off 17 shots, however, it was unlikely they were going to score considering they managed to find the target just once from those efforts.

Mohamed Salah was unable to score for Liverpool.

The best chance of the game for Jurgen Klopp's men came in the first half with serial goalscorer Mohamed Salah unable to keep his header down before watching it go just over the bar.

Liverpool were unlucky not to get a penalty in the second half as Kyle Walker-Peters brought down Sadio Mane in the box but the referee waved play on immediately after.

It is vital that Liverpool change their fortunes this time around with a win being vital for them if they are to push towards the Champions League.
