It is no secret that Sadio Mane has underperformed this season. With only seven goals to his name in the Premier League so far (compared to 14 at the same time last season), it would be fair to say his performances have been lacklustre.
Following the defeat to Real Madrid on Tuesday, it is clear that a change in the squad is needed in order to qualify for Champions League football next season. This could come in the form of a front three consisting of Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino & Mohamed Salah, which would leave Sadio on the bench (According to Daily Mail's Dominic King).
As mentioned, this may be a result of his poor form, which could come down to a possible lack of confidence when around the opposition box. Looking closer at the game against Los Blancos (based on FotMob statistics), the Senegalese forward only won three of his 15 Duels against opposing players, along with having zero shots registered, despite playing the full 90.
This is reinforced by Jurgen Klopp talking in the pre-match press conference stating, “Obviously the numbers scoring-wise are not great at the moment and he knows that. For a player with the mind-set of Sadio, he wants to do extremely well. But this is the situation he is in.”
Jurgen also went on to say that the Number 10’s poor form is “Clear”, suggesting that “we all need breaks from time to time” (in reference to his recent performances). Therefore further casting doubt on the possibility of the player making an appearance in the Starting XI.
