After The Reds were victorious on the opening game of their Premier League season, we thought we’d revisit the Stolen XI series. In this edition of The Stolen XI we’ll be discussing which player we’d steal from Burnley and why.
After Burnley’s second promotion to the Premier League in 2016 they have been a solid premier league club with a very distinctive ‘route-one’ style of football. The highest they have finished since their promotion is seventh and surprisingly that was during their first season back into the top flight of English football.
Anyway, back to the reason we’re here. Throughout every area of their team Burnley have quality but personally I feel that there are three players that really make Burnley the team that they are.
These are Chris Wood, Dwight McNeil and James Tarkowski. Each of these players command different areas of the pitch but all could add something to Liverpool’s team
Chris Wood (29) is a proven Premier League striker who has scored at least 10 Premier League goals for each season that he’s been in the Premier League and that without a world class team around him.
If Liverpool could steal him, I feel that he would get at least 15 goals in the League due to the quality of players around him. I also feel that due to the way that Liverpool’s system works he would really compliment the way that they play.
Dwight McNeil (21) on the other hand is a very exciting young prospect who has made 16 appearances at youth level for the England under 20 and 21’s. As well as this, since his Premier League debut in 2018 he has contributed to 23 goals in 97 Premier League appearances which is a solid return for a player within the Burnley team.
I feel that McNeil would be a super sub and help Liverpool increase their overall squad depth which is the main area they need to improve on. If McNeil got a move to a ‘big club’, he would surprise many people and really be able to showcase his class.
If Liverpool could steal McNeil, he could turn out to be a surprising signing much like Diogo Jota was in the previous transfer window.
James Tarkowski (28) is a brick wall in the centre back position and I feel that year after year he has shown that he has the desired skillset to be a very productive and useful Premier League defender.
In the opening game of the 21/22 season Tarkowski opened up Burnley’s scoring with a thumping header from a corner. The way Tarkowski plays would also fit Jürgen Klopp’s style of football due to his strength in the air and in his tackling.
I also feel that the partnership he has formed with Ben Mee is one of the reasons why Burnley are consistently safe year on year and without him their team would crumble.
With all these stats and facts in mind, the player that I would choose for Liverpool to steal would be Dwight McNeil as he has huge potential and has already shown signs of being a world class player.
I also feel that with McNeil in the squad, Liverpool’s team would genuinely be stronger as he would add another layer of depth into their squad that they need, especially if Xherdan Shaqiri makes a move this summer.
