We may be less than two weeks away from Euro 2020, but fans from clubs all around Europe will be keeping a close eye on the headlines and social media in anticipation of any possible new signings that may arrive.
One of the most sought after players in the Premier League this summer is Youri Tielemans. Sunderland legend and former Leicester player Kevin Phillips believes Tielemans will leave the Foxes this summer if the right club comes in with an offer.
Tielemans has attracted a lot of interest from other Premier League sides including Liverpool who according to reports, are rumoured to be keen on the midfielder. Speaking with Football Insider, Kevin Phillips said Tielemans would leave Leicester if the Reds came knocking.
“I don’t think Brendan Rodgers would want Tielemans to go but I think when Liverpool come knocking at your door and speak to your agent, then the player is going to listen and is probably going to want to go."
Youri Tielemans signed for Leicester on a permanent deal in 2019 after a successful loan spell and has gone on to make 108 appearances for the club, scoring 17 goals. The 24 year-old has also made 37 appearances for Belgium and finished 3rd place place with his country in the 2018 World Cup.
He has also found recent success with Leicester, winning the FA Cup under Brendan Rodgers, a final in which he scored the winning goal, but unfortunately missed out on a Champions League place on the last day of the season.
The former European Golden Shoe winner Phillips, believes Champions League football would be a massive draw for the Belgian midfielder if approached by Liverpool adding; “Especially now that Leicester won’t be getting Champions League football next year after just missing out while Liverpool have, that’s a big, big draw for any player."
Despite not qualifying for the Champions League next season, Tielemans could still be happy to stay at Leicester as Brendan Rodgers current project with the Foxes will so far be deemed successful given their FA Cup success. Phillips added that an offer from a club such as Liverpool would be difficult for Tielemans to turn down saying;
"If Liverpool were to make enquiries and make an offer then it could be one of those where it’s hard to stop the player going and turn the deal down, so it will be an interesting one.”
If Liverpool decide to replace Georginio Wijnaldum this summer, Youri Tielemans would be the perfect replacement. The 24 year-old is versatile in the middle of the park, being able to play a creative and attacking role but also a holding midfield role if needed. If there is one thing Liverpool lacks, it is goals from midfield. Tielemans can score goals and do the defensive duties Jurgen Klopp requires from his squad.
The only possible stumbling block in the pursuit of the Belgium international will be his inevitable high price tag. Leicester will not let one of their key players go so easily, and if the sale of Harry Maguire is anything to go by, Tielemans could be valued at around 60 million euros by the Foxes.
