Report: Mohamed Salah Wants New Contract With Liverpool For £400k Per Week

The value of Mohamed Salah to Liverpool seems to grow with every match. Whilst there is no agreement on a contract extension it seems from reports on Monday afternoon that it may take £400k per week to retain the services of the Egyptian.

The 29 year old has taken his game to new levels this season and has scored ten goals so far in all competitions. It is not only the number of goals Salah is scoring but also the quality of the goals.

The last two strikes were fabulous individual efforts against rivals Manchester City and Watford that could well be the top two when it comes to October’s goal of the month competition.

What Will It Take To Get Salah To Re-sign?

The Telegraph are reporting that it is going to take something in the range of £400k per week to retain the services of Salah who is keen to stay at the club.

A deal of that size will blow the current wage structure out of the water and will mean the Egyptian is paid far more than any other player who puts on the red shirt of Liverpool.

The impact on other players therefore will be one factor being considered during negotiations as well as the size of the already hefty wage bill.

Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and skipper Jordan Henderson all signed lucrative new deals during the summer which has pushed the fixed salaries paid by the club to new levels.

Luis Suarez Comparison

The report from the Telegraph compares this situation with that of Luis Suarez’s contract negotiations in 2013 but rightly points out a fundamental difference.

Like Salah, the Uruguayan was the talisman for his team but one of very few of real quality in Brendan Rodgers' squad at the time.

Looking at the current squad however, there are several world class players who also have a heavy influence on the team’s success along with Salah.

LFCTR Verdict

It does seem impossible to imagine that Salah will not get a new and significantly improved contract offer at Liverpool.

His early season form has been nothing short of sensational and the team would be far weaker without him.

Last season when his colleagues in attack lost form, Salah continued to score goals at a prolific rate, ending the season with 31 goals in all competitions.

If he was allowed to leave, there would be uproar amongst supporters with their anger likely to be aimed at owners FSG.

Should he explore other options, Salah will be able to earn more elsewhere but it’s doubtful he will want to give up the adulation of his adoring Anfield faithful for money.

For the deal to get done therefore, it’s going to need compromise on both sides.

Let’s hope the negotiations are swift and this is not played out in public with the end result being the Egyptian King tied to the club for years to come.
