VIDEO: Virgil van Dijk edges closer to first team return

After five months undergoing rehabilitation on his knee injury, Virgil van Dijk is back running on the pitch.

Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk has provided a welcome boost to fans with an update on his rehabilitation progression.

The Dutchman has posted numerous updates in his recovery from an anterior cruciate ligaments injury he sustained after the horror tackle from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

An injury-ravaged season has often been linked with the slump in Jurgen Klopp's sides fortune.

Fulham's visit on Sunday could see an eye-watering 20th different centre-back pairing for Liverpool this season, following the knock to loanee Ozan Kabak suffered in the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea on Thursday.

The Liverpool vice-captain has been sorely missed not just defensively but what the different qualities he brings to the team.

Jordan Henderson's groin injury required surgery and as a result, means another leader will be out for an extended period.

Speaking at the beginning of February to the official Liverpool website, Jurgen Klopp discussed a return for the 29-year-old, he said:

“In the moment, I don’t know where these things are coming from – nobody really, no doctor, nobody really told me there’s a chance for Virgil to play in this season again.

“I don’t want to say that’s absolutely impossible but it’s not likely. It’s not likely. We don’t have to discuss these things really."

Also on the treatment table for the Reds is van Dijk's Champions League and Premier League-winning defensive partner Joe Gomez, who suffered a season-ending injury whilst he was on international duty with England.
