It is no secret that Liverpool have been in the market for a new defender. However, news broke that the Merseyside club are finalizing a deal for Red Bull Leipzig centre-back Ibrahima Konate.
Mark Jones from Mirror Football says that Liverpools interest in Konate has been known for some time.
"Discussions over a transfer are said to have 'advanced' in recent days. Liverpool are hopeful that they could secure a deal at a lower fee for Konate."
The news of this put Liverpool supporters in a tizzy leading even Ibrahima Konate himself to comment on the news.
When speaking about the transfer news to L'Equipe, the French defender said, "I woke up, I saw my phone ringing all over the place.”
"I just wanted to tell them, ‘Hey, I played yesterday, I’m tired, leave me alone."
The defender calmly responded and said that his focus is on the Euros and Leipzig at the moment.
“Frankly, I don’t even watch this. We can’t focus on that, there are the Euros and then my return to the club. You have to focus on that and not on the external things.”
Liverpool are expected to pay Konate's €40 million release clause, but are hoping to pay less. With Ozan Kabak continuing to impress, it leaves the futures of both Nathaniel Phillips and Ben Davies hanging by a threat.
