Liverpool to finalise a deal to sign Ibrahima Konate

Liverpool are on course to secure the first high-profile signing of the summer in the form of RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate.

Liverpool are in the process of finalising a deal to sign Frenchman Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig, The Athletic has revealed.

It has been confirmed that representatives of the two are already at the advanced stage of negotiations.

Konate's team-mate, Dayot Upamecano, has been linked with a move to the Premier League champions but Champions League holders, Bayern Munich, confirmed the signing of the defender in February.

He has a €40million release clause in his contract, with Leipzig anticipating that it will be triggered.

David Ornstein continues in The Athletic to explain that sources in Germany hint that the six-time Champions League winners have made "significant progress on a player seen as key to their recruitment plans."

Injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have contributed to a failed title defence as the casualties played a part in derailing their bid to regain the Premier League title.

As a result, they were forced into signing Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak in the January transfer window.

The latter arrived from relegation-stricken FC Schalke 04 on a loan deal with an option to buy priced at £18million, plus add-ons.

Liverpool have until the 1st of June to confirm their stance on the Turkey international, but performances before the international break highlighted qualities in the 21-year-old's game.

On the other hand, Ben Davies has yet to feature for Jurgen Klopp's side whilst only being named on the substitutes bench twice in the Premier League.

Celtic are reportedly set to renew their interest in the 25-year-old in the summer after the defender was snatched from their grasp with his Preston North End contract due to expire in June.

Questions have been raised about the youngster's injury history, however, Football Journalist Chris Williams rebuffed the claims saying: "Three of those are precautionary, no games missed just means a lighter training session.

"One says 96 days, this included the summer break. There is only one significant injury on that list, would a club skip the chance to sign Van Dijk if offered? I doubt it."

Konate emerged as a primary target for Liverpool following Bayern's acquisition of Upamecano.
