Liverpool will be looking to ensure they don't make the same mistake twice heading into next season as they look to add to their back line.

As well as the increasingly likely arrival of central defender Ibrahima Konate from Red Bull Leipzig, Liverpool have also been linked with Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

Real Madrid Defender Raphael Varane Is On Liverpool's Radar

The French centre-back has recently expressed his desire to leave Madrid this summer and has been linked to several top teams in Europe. The four time Champions League winner has been heavily linked with Manchester United for some time but according to the Manchester Evening News, Liverpool have also held talks with the French internationals representatives.

The Lille native has made 235 appearances for Real Madrid and has multiple Champions League, La Liga and Spanish cup medals to his name as well as winning the World Cup with France in 2018. Varane is the youngest player to win the Champions League three times, winning his third at the age of 24.

The 28 year-old is one of the top rated central defenders in world football and would be a fantastic addition to either side. Manchester United need a player of Varane's calibre more than Liverpool do, but if a deal for Ibrahima Konate fails to be finalised, the Reds could look at the Frenchman as an alternative.

Liverpool's season has taken a blow due to injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez. Despite solid showings from Nathaniel Phillips and loanee Ozan Kabak, the Reds need another addition to the centre of their defence to avoid a similar problem like the one this season.

Raphael Varane is definitely a player Liverpool should keep on their radar this summer. It could also be worth noting that Varane could cost the same as the 40m euro release clause Red Bull Leipzig are requesting for Konate’s signature, but would offer far more experience. There is the possibility that the Reds could have seven senior centre backs heading into next season, but this can only be a positive headache.
