Could it finally be happening?
The rumours and speculation about the replacement of mainstay and cult hero Gini Wijnaldum have been rife to say the least.
Liverpool have been linked with Renato Sanches, Youri Tielemanns, Yves Bissouma and many others in the hunt for a midfield man but according to reports it’s the Spainish sensation Saul who The Reds are bidding for.
This particular link has been stirring for a while now and perhaps reminds fans of the Thiago deal last season.
That will we/won’t we tenderhooks that kept us all guessing whether the Bayern man would join the Merseyside giants?
Thiago did eventually join the Reds and Diogo Jota soon followed in a classic Michael Edward’s ‘under the radar’ signing.
Could Saul be the next high profile signing?
According to reports in Spain, Liverpool are set to make a new bid to Atletico Madrid totaling around £41m with Atletico expected to accept the offer.
Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United have also been linked with a move for Saul in recent weeks so the earlier the deal gets done the better.
Saul will command a fairly sizeable wage, one in which he may have to drop in order to sign for Klopp’s Liverpool, I personally can not see LFC paying Saul’s wage of a reported £200k a week he is currently on in the Spanish capital.
Saul was involved in a swap deal with Barcelona’s Antoine Greizmann but negotiations fell through due to the players not wanting to take a wage cut.
Manchester United have been busy in the market and have brought in Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, so balancing the books may be key for The Red Devils before any further incomings occur with Paul Pogba rumoured to be exiting for PSG.
Liverpool may need to pounce soon before United bring in additional transfer funds through sales.
The report from AS outlines that Diego Simeone’s Madrid would accept the offer, especially since the arrival of Rodrigo De Paul to the midfield.
Liverpool are light in the midfield area in terms of consistent performers.
Fabinho, Thiago and Jordan Henderson would be the chosen front three when fit at present, but they can not man the midfield all season without rotation.
Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have had fitness issues over the years and Curtis Jones is still finding his feet.
James Milner is as always, Mr. Reliable but long term a younger elite player is needed to fill the void left by Gini.
Saul has the engine to play in Klopp’s system and has a wealth of talent in playing at the elite level.
Saul has won titles with Madrid to elevate him to the experienced and successful player Liverpool are in need of.
Could it now be time that Liverpool strike in the market with a deal such as this one, almost too good to turn down?
As always, these are only reports, but if they are to be believed, it could very well be the restart of the Liverpool transfer window fans have been begging to see.
