Manchester City reportedly want five 'high quality' centre-backs available for the 2020/21 season, with six names in the clubs mind, according to Bleacher Report’s Dean Jones.
According to these reports the aim is for City to have Aymeric Laporte, Eric Garcia and Fernandinho being supplemented by two new signings. Nicolas Otamendi is almost guaranteed to leave, while John Stones may leave depending on whether a suitable offer is made for his services.
In terms of the players coming in, one is expected to be a high-profile player who can slot into the team immediately; whilst the other would be a youngster who can be developed and be eased in over time.
The same sources indicate that Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, Leicester’s Caglar Soyuncu, Benfica’s Ruben Dias and Milan Skriniar of Inter Milan are said to be the main contenders for the ‘high-profile’ signing. Nathan Ake of Bournemouth and Villareal’s Pau Torres are also believed to be under consideration.
City’s full-backs are also facing the same level of scrutiny, with Benjamin Mendy not being guaranteed to remain with the team moving forward as the club’s interest in Leicester’s Ben Chilwell is showing no signs of fading.
As is the norm, Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain will be heading up the transfer proceedings with Pep Guardiola firmly on board regarding the need to yet again, invest heavily in defenders.
