Phil Foden is lighting up the Premier League at the ripe age of 20-years-old, and according to veteran midfielder Fernandinho, he will be one of the greats.
In speaking to the Manchester Evening News, the Brazilian hailed Foden’s ability at such a young age.
“He might be one of the great prodigies we have, not just at Manchester City, but in English football. He’s already playing, but his future is bright. We can’t forget he’s only 20, playing for Man City, such a huge responsibility..."
The veteran midfielder expressed just how hard it is for a player of Phil Foden’s age and relative lack of experience to break into a star-studded squad such as Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side.
"Every three days, these players have to show why they're employed by Man City. At the end of every season, the team is assembled to reach top spots, compete for titles. We’re talking about the issue of pressure of results and the pressure for good performances."
He continued, "So, when you have a 20-year-old kid who’s considered to be, arguably, the best of his generation, it ends up being a huge source of pressure. Very high expectations. Without a doubt, as a manager, you can’t single anybody out."
Foden will be looking to once again make a name for himself at the very top level of the game, as Manchester City take on Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final first-leg on Tuesday night - a game in which some believe Foden will start.
