Erling Haaland's transfer fee has reportedly been set by Borussia Dortmund, in anticipation for a highly-contested battle for their 20 year-old breakthrough striker from some of Europe's heavyweight clubs.

The Norwegian forward, since making the move from RB Salzburg in January 2020, has quickly become the most sought-after striker talent in world football. Haaland has scored 32 goals in just 31 appearances this season, including 10 goals in just six Champions League games.

According to information provided by Stephan Uersfeld and Rodri Faez in the latest edition of the ESPN Insider Notebook, Erling Haaland's transfer fee this summer has been set by Borussia Dortmund at an eye-watering €180 million.

Although the striker's current contract includes a very minimal release clause in comparison to his valuation, this clause is not active until the summer of 2022. As a result, Borussia Dortmund feel that by demanding an astronomical fee, they may be able to hang on to their prized asset for another 12 months.

Sources have told ESPN that same hardline tactic used to retain Jadon Sancho last summer is in place this summer for Haaland, in a move that is designed to warn Europe's heavyweights off making a bid.

There is a suggestion within the report from ESPN's sources that Manchester City are 'surprised' at the optimistic reports in Spain regarding Real Madrid and Barcelona's hopes of signing the striker, as they believe they are in a stronger position to make a move.

In addition to Manchester City, there is a feeling that Real Madrid and Chelsea will represent the greatest threat to the Etihad officials' hopes of securing the player in the early months of the summer transfer market.

As reported by the Telegraph in recent weeks, Erling Haaland is Manchester City's 'primary target' this summer, with a striker seen as a 'priority' given the contract situation surrounding Sergio Aguero. A different report from the same outlet had also previously suggested that from the viewpoint of Manchester City, they feel their greatest competitors for Haaland is Real Madrid.
