Terrence Boyd stays in form with Europa League brace
Terrence Boyd is playing like a forward who has his eye on a U.S. roster spot for the upcoming November camp and friendlies.
Boyd's brace propelled Rapid Vienna to a 2-2 draw with Belgian side Genk on Thursday and put him in double digits for goals on the season with 10 in all competitions. Boyd headed home a rebound off a corner kick sequence in the 40th minute to level the score before heading home another cross from the right in first-half stoppage time to give Rapid Vienna the lead heading into the locker room.
Genk found an equalizer of its own in the second half through Thomas Buffel, forcing Rapid Vienna to settle for a point that keeps the club on the bottom of Group G, level on points but behind on goal differential to Swiss club Thun. Two games remain in the group stage for Boyd's side to make up the four-point edge owned by second-place Dynamo Kyiv for a place in the knockout round.
For Boyd, the goals were his second and third in the Europa League this season, and he now has six in his career in the competition (he had three with Rapid Vienna last season). He has four goals in five games since the October international break.
Regardless of his headers Thursday, it appears as if Boyd was on Jurgen Klinsmann's radar for the upcoming USA friendlies against Scotland and Austria anyway, with Klinsmann telling USSoccer.com in a Q&A Wednesday that, "With Terrence Boyd at Rapid Vienna, he’s totally motivated for this camp to play in the second match against Austria."
